Merry Wives of Alcester is a small, friendly group of ladies (not restricted to wives) who meet at the Methodist Church on Priory Road, near the entrance to Waitrose car park, usually every second Tuesday of the month at 8pm. We have a variety of interesting speakers and refreshments are included afterwards. We also have a few social events throughout the year. Admission is £6 for visitors and £5 for members with the annual subscription of £6 payable at the September meeting.

Step beyond the tourist trail and into the murkier corners of Birmingham’s past. This illustrated talk, based on my walking tour, uncovers true tales of tragedy, resilience, and the extraordinary lives lived — and lost — in the city.

We’ll visit the forgotten corridors of the Victorian Eye Hospital, descend into the secrets of a Cold War nuclear bunker, and unpick the mysteries of the so-called “Red Palace.” Along the way, expect tales of the last public hanging, and gangsters that still haunt the streets.

Packed with atmospheric photographs and real artefacts you can handle, this is Birmingham’s hidden history — raw, real, and rarely told.
